Bacon & Brussels Sprouts with The Icing On My Cupcake!

Hi Everyone! I'm visiting from The Icing On My Cupcake. I've got a recipe to share with you today.

Bacon and Brussels Sprouts is one of my all time favourite combinations. And a little while ago, my partner asked me to make it in to a risotto. So, I did.

Ingredients

700ml - stock (either chicken or veg)
3 rashers bacon, chopped
6 Brussels Sprouts, stems and outer leaves removed, chopped
1 cup Aborio rice
1 cup dry white wine
lots of butter
lots of Parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper to taste

Method

Heat your stock in a saucepan over low heat.

Pop a large heavy based pan over medium heat with a splash of olive oil and a good helping of butter (about 1Tbs) and cook your bacon to your liking. Then add in your brussels

Then add your brussels and cook until just soft.

The add in your rice. Stir to make sure it's covered in the buttery oily goodness, and cook for a few minutes before adding your wine

Cook stirring for about 5 minutes, until all the wine is absorbed. Then start adding your stock 1 ladle at a time. Cook stirring until stock is absorbed before adding your next ladleful.

Taste the risotto before each ladleful to see if it's done. You want it to be al dente. Once it's done, remove from the heat and add in another generous lump of butter, and heaps of Parmesan, and stir to combine.

This dish is quite salty already, from the bacon and the Parmesan, so I always taste after the Parmesan, before adding salt. And stir in a generous amount of cracked black pepper, and serve!

Hope you all give this yummy dish a go!

Leopard Print Nails with Amber from The Whale & Wasp!

Hi everybody! My name is Amber, how is everyone this fine and fabulous Monday? I don't know about you, but painting my nails is probably one of my favourite things to do. And I love to try out new patterns and ideas for manicures. Today I am going to show you how to do leopard print nails in 4 easy steps! Here's what's more exciting - you can use liquid eyeliner to draw the spot lines! And you don't need to be an artist to do this, it's so easy and quick. Aren't they pretty?

Great let's get started! Here's what you'll need:

  • One colour for the base. Once you get the hang of this you can learn to colour coordinate, for now I'd start with a neutral colour.
  • One colour for the spots. Again, you'll be able to switch this up but today we are using a darker one than the base.
  • Liquid eyeliner (preferably one you don't use for your eyes, you can purchase cheap liquid eyeliner anywhere for your nails, just as long as it has a thin applicator).
  • A good top coat.

What I used:
  • Revlon in Elegant (base)
  • China Glaze in Below Deck (spots)
  • Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eyeliner in Black Brown
  • NYC Matte Me Crazy Top Coat

Step One: Use a base coat if preferred, let dry and then apply a thin coat of your base colour. Apply a second coat if needed after the first dries completely.
Step Two: With the colour you chose to do the leopard spots, run the brush along the neck of the polish bottle to get rid of all the excess polish off the brush. You'll need just a bit on the end of the brush for this step. Lightly dab each nail about 4-6 times to make spots. Don't worry if they are round or not. In fact, it looks a lot better if you make the spots different shapes and sizes. Wait for the spots to dry completely before the next step, otherwise it will get messy!
Step Three: Take your liquid eyeliner, rid of excess liquid on the brush and draw around the spots, leaving an opening on each. You can do two lines like ( ) or run it almost around like a horseshoe. Add an extra dot on a few of the spots and elsewhere on the nail, much like how the spots look on a real leopard. Continue this for every nail.
Step Four: Now, liquid eyeliner takes a little longer to dry, so I advise leaving the nails for about an hour before you apply your top coat. Otherwise, the eyeliner will leave streaks. I would recommend not skipping this step because the eyeliner needs the top coat or it will rub off eventually.

Tada! Leopard spots on your nails! I always use a mattifying top coat for this manicure but it looks just as well with a normal top coat. I highly recommend using Seche Vite, it really is the BEST top coat I have - and I have a lot of top coats!

If you'd like to see this in another colour (the one on my other hand haha) you can check out my blog today for my weekly nail here. You can also check me out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr

That is what I appear to be, just a girl.

One day I'll be smart enough to spend time looking out of windows instead of into mirrors.
I'm searching for someone like me, who supports and believes in my impossible dreams.
I'm Julie.

Why Do I Blog?
I started blogging the summer of 2011 because my family was relocating to Turkey and I wanted a way to stay in touch and let me family and friends know about my adventures abroad. I figured I would post stories of what living in the Middle East is like and photos of my life. I got lazy, and busy, and soon forgot about the blog.  I picked it up a year later when I was working at a boring summer job and needed something to occupy my time. I decided to begin my chronicling my adventure from the past year.
I started college this past fall, and suddenly I had new adventures to write about and share. A few months ago, I stumbled upon a friends blog (check it out at http://www.bellatheblog.com/)   and was amazed at how professional it looked and how many followers she had. Hers had begun as a personal blog as well, and had transformed into an income-generating marvel viewed by thousands of people every day. That was all it took, and I caught the ‘bloggin bug’. I spent hours redesigning my blog and learning the basics of web-design. I commented on others blogs, swapped buttons, and started to make new blogging friends. So here I am, just starting out and introducing a new budding blog, Different is Beautiful. I am just learning and getting on my feet, but I would love to have you stop by and let me know what you think!

Guest Post: Cookies with Lauren of In Between Idols!

Today I've got the lovely Lauren from In Between Idols here to share a recipe for some delicious sweet and salty cookies! They look delicious, and you better believe I'll be trying out the recipe myself as well! Make sure to run over and check out her blog too, it's fabulous!

Hello, humans! I am Lauren and I blog over at In Between Idols. I like to talk (write) about my half-assed DIYs, my uneventful life, and, what I’ll be sharing today, my kitchen adventures! Today, I decided I needed to have some cookies. Lately, I’ve been obsessing over sweet and salty foods, so I knew pretzels needed to be involved. And chocolate. And whatever else I had in my kitchen. This was the result.

Ingredients (Because I am a grocery hoarder, I had all of these in my pantry, but your case may differ!)
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 cup softened vegetable spread (or butter)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 egg (beaten)
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup butterscotch chips
1/2 cup crushed pretzels
sea salt

Prepare
1// Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl of some sort. Set aside for later.
2// Beat butter and sugars until light ‘n’ fluffy! Add in egg and vanilla and mix well.
3// Combine wet and dry ingredients. I did this savage style by dumping the flour mix into the wet bowl all at once. You might want to try a more civilized approach.
4// Here’s the fun part – add in your yummies! I used chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and pretzels but you can add or omit ingredients as you wish.
5// Cover and let mix chill in the fridge for 1 hour.
6// Preheat your oven to 350 and scoop little balls of cookie dough onto a cookie sheet while you wait for it to heat up. If you don’t have a silicone baking mat, GO BUY ONE. Like, seriously. They’re like $10 at Bed, Bath and Beyond and they are insanely amazing. Okay, got one? Good. Use it. Place your cookie balls about 1-2 inches apart and smush them with a spoon to flatten them a bit.
7// Wanna kick your cookies up a notch? Sprinkle some sea salt over each piece! Totally optional, but so worth it!
8// Bake for 10-12 minutes, depending on how soft you want your cookies. And you’re freaking done!

These are the perfect mix of sweet and salty and awesome, seriously. They are pretty easy to make (even for a kitchen newbie like myself!) and take very little time! Next time your sweet tooth is nagging for some lovin’, whip some of these babies up. You can thank me later. Really though, I’d love to hear all about it if you do try this recipe out!

Thanks so so so much to Brooke for having me today! She’s definitely a rad little lady! If you enjoyed this post and want to see more crap I whip up on a whim, or some sweet DIYs, or just some non-nonsensical ramblings, hop on over to my blog and we can be pals, muchachas!
